WOULD YOU RATHER …EAT ARTIFICIAL COLORS OR ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS?

What I like about Jill Ettinger is even though she is an expert on food and health and she helped to build some of the biggest organic and natural household name brands, she has remained very humble.  She grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and noticed at a very young age, the connection between what she ate and how she felt.   Jill now works as a writer, editor and photographer, featured as a food and health expert on Organic Authority, EcoSalon, Sunwarrior News, Naturally Savvy and Reality Sandwich.

It seems like an awfully silly question for a healthy food lover, but we suspect you’re doing both anyway. So, would you rather eat artificial colors or artificial flavors?

These sneaky ingredients find their way into lots of foods, particularly when you’re dining out and labels aren’t accessible. They’re also found in vitamins, medicines, mouthwash, personal care products and cosmetics. So, if you had to choose, which would you rather eat?

ARTIFICIAL COLORS

Food dyes sound harmless enough. A little blue here. Some red there. What would Easter eggs be without food dye? Who ever heard of eating a popsicle that wasn’t bright blue, red or orange?

But according to research, artificial colors have been connected with an increased risk of behavioral issues, particularly among children. For children who already displayed hyperactive behaviors, the artificial colors intensified their behavioral issues.

While some colors have been banned because of their origin in coal tar, which is a known carcinogen, others remain on the market, with severe health risks, including allergies and (still a risk) cancer.

Among the most common artificial colors are:

  •  FD&C Blue # 1 & # 2
  • FD&C Green # 3
  • FD&C Red # 3 & # 40
  • FD&C Yellow # 5 & # 6
  • Orange B

Green #3, Blues #1 and #2 and Yellow #6 have all been connected with allergic reactions and cancer in lab animals. Red #3 has been connected with cancer and genetic disorders. While banned from cosmetic applications, it’s still allowed in food.

Keep an eye out the next time you’re at a sushi restaurant for that bright green seaweed salad, the wasabi paste and even the pickled ginger, as they’re all potentially harboring artificial colors. Same goes for jams and jellies, mustards, hot sauce and ketchup, and other condiments served at restaurants. Read your vitamin labels. Make your own homemade mouthwash or opt for an all-natural mouthwash.

ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS

We’re a species driven by the tongue. We love to talk, taste…kiss. Of course, all of those habits can get us into quite a bit of trouble if we’re not careful.

When it comes to taste, we know all too well how much trouble that’s causing us now, particularly for our nation’s children. Sugary, genetically modified fruit-flavored cereals, sodas, Pop-Tarts, candy and popsicles takes precedent over actual fruit.  Ketchup covered French fries and Domino’s pizza sauce are preferred over an actual tomato. That the artificial flavor came to be preferred over the real thing is not only shocking, but dangerous as well.

Artificial flavors can contain hundreds of chemicals, and because they’re proprietary formulations, companies don’t have to disclose what’s in them, making it difficult to identify health risks. They’re usually only identified on labels as “artificial flavors.”

While more research exists on the dangers of artificial colors, there are some known risks with artificial flavors, like MSG (monosodium glutamate). MSG can even be listed as a natural flavor, as it goes by many other names including autolyzed yeast extract, disodium 5-inosinate, and soy protein isolate.

MSG has been connected with serious health issues including asthma, headaches, diarrhea, blurred vision and numbness.

Artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, are often added to foods to boost flavors. They’re most often found in diet sodas, but aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are also found in yogurts, cereals, and even in that artificially colored pickled ginger from the sushi restaurant.

Aspartame has been identified as the most common cause for food-related complaints to the FDA, and includes a list of severe reactions from tinnitus and headaches, to cancer and fertility issues.

Both artificial flavors and colors pose serious health risks. And they separate us from a true food experience. We’re essentially eating perfumes and lipsticks. And that’s not food. That’s more or less a fruity-flavored insanity.

We do our best to avoid these ingredients, hopefully. But still, we can’t help but wonder, now that you know where they’re hiding and what the risks are, which would you rather eat?

5 Places Left In The World With “Healing” Water

Did you know there are ONLY 5 places left in the world with “healing” water?  They are Tlacote Mexico, Nordenau Germany, Nadana Village India, Yankalilla Australia and The Himalayan Mountains in China.

People come by the thousands every day to get this “healing” water.  Most of them don’t understand why it works they just know…it works.  Here is the rate of improvement from drinking this “healing water”:

Diabetes ~ 88%

Arthritis ~ 87%

Digestion ~ 91%

Respiratory ~ 89%

Skin Disease ~ 96%

Allergies ~ 99%

HIV ~ 100%

Back in the 1950’s the Japanese decided to study the water in these 5 remote locations.  They discovered the “healing” water was loaded with antioxidants (negative charge instead of positive), it was alkaline (most water today is acidic) and was micro-clustered (clumps of 5 or 6 molecules instead of 15 to 20).

The Japanese eventually built a machine that would take regular water and through the process of electrolysis…change it into this amazing “healing” water.  It’s called a water ionizer and in Japan it is a licensed medical device which they use in most of their hospitals and clinics.  The people of Japan have been drinking this water for 40 years and they are #1 in the world in overall health and longevity while the U.S. is #38.

The 5 Simple Truths About Ionized Water

Does pH REALLY Matter?

Does pH matter in an aquarium?  Of course it does.  If the pH of an aquarium is too low, the fish will die.  Well our body is similar to an aquarium…the fish representing our cells.  Our body is 70% water…the water outside the cell is salt water and inside the cell is fresh water.  Just like our planet is 70% water and the water outside the continents is salt water and inside the continents is fresh water.

The pH of our blood is 7.365 and it must stay extremely close to that or we will die.  So, the body will do whatever it has to do to maintain the alkalinity of the blood.  One of the first places the body will draw from is the bones.  Calcium is very alkaline so the body will draw calcium from the bones which will lead to osteoporosis over time.  Another thing our amazing body will do if we are getting too acidic is store fat around our organs to protect them from the acidic environment.  A lot of people lose weight when they start drinking alkaline water because as they become less and less acidic, the body starts releasing the stored fat.

A lot of Naturopathic doctors believe there really is only ONE disease…Acidosis.  The body is too acidic and it just depends how acidic and what part of the body is effected.  Here’s a list of symptoms you’ll experience if you’re in the early stages of Acidosis:  acne, muscle pain, dizziness, cold hands and feet, low energy, joint pain, food allergies, hyperactivity, panic attacks, PMS, bloating, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, strong smelling urine, headaches, rapid heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, white coated tongue, hard to get up in the morning, head mucous and metallic taste in mouth.  If you would like me to email a complete list of symptoms for beginning, intermediate and advanced Acidosis symptoms, just send me an email to rhondagessner@gmail.com

Because our body is 70% water, the easiest way to raise your pH is by drinking alkaline water.  It is very difficult to raise your pH with just diet alone once again because…we are 70% WATER!!!   Of course it’s important to also eat a good diet.  We can’t expect our body to produce life if all we eat is dead fo0d.  You can tell if a food has life by asking this simple question…will it rot or spoil?  If so, there are live enzymes in it and you want to eat it BEFORE it rots or spoils.  I would also recommend eating 80% alkaline foods and no more than 20% acidic.

It’s been proven that your body can heal itself like God intended if you are slightly alkaline and the easiest way to raise your pH is by drinking alkaline water.  The reason people are acidic today is because of what they’re eating, drinking, breathing and stress.  My personal thinking is that water is just too big a piece of the health puzzle to get wrong.  If we are almost 3/4 water then 3/4 of the health puzzle is one big piece made up of water.  When you drink Kangen alkaline, high antioxidant, micro-clustered water…you are helping to create the environment your body needs to heal itself.  If you would like a FREE 2 week trial, send me an email @ rhondagessner@gmail.com or call me @ 717-333-9076.

You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty

When I first decided to start studying water, the first book I read was “You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty” by Dr. Batmanghelidj.  Wow, what an eye opener.  I could not believe all the things that can go wrong in your body when you don’t drink enough water and I was not a water drinker at that time.  I started my day with coffee and continued drinking coffee until at least lunch time.  If I drank 3 or 4 bottled waters in a day, I thought a drank a lot of water…wow, was I wrong.

Here’s how Dr. Batmanghelidj got started on a lifetime of studying water ~

When the Iranian Revolution broke out in 1979, Dr. Batmanghelidj was placed in the infamous Evin Prison as a political prisoner for two years and seven months. It was there he discovered the healing powers of water. One night, Dr. B. had to treat a fellow prisoner with crippling peptic ulcer pain. With no medications at his disposal, Dr. B. gave him two glasses of water. Within eight minutes, his pain disappeared. He was instructed to drink two glasses of water every three hours and became absolutely pain free for his four remaining months in the prison. Dr. B. successfully treated 3,000 fellow prisoners suffering from stress-induced peptic ulcer disease with water alone. While in prison he conducted extensive research into the medicinal effects of water in preventing and relieving many painful degenerative diseases. Evin proved an ideal “stress laboratory,” and despite his being offered an earlier release, Dr. B. chose to stay an extra four months in prison to complete his research into the relationship of dehydration and bleeding peptic ulcer disease. The report of his findings was published as the editorial of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology in June 1983. The New York Times Science Watch reported this discovery on June 21, 1983.  (watercure.com)

Since our body is 70-75% water, doesn’t it make sense that the quantity and quality of the water we drink is going to have a HUGE impact on our health?  It makes sense to me so I want to encourage you to start studying water and reading this book is a great place to start.  I buy all my books used from Amazon.

Achieving optimum health is like a puzzle.  The puzzle includes many pieces like diet, exercise, rest, water, etc.  About 3/4 of the puzzle is made up of one thing…WATER.  That’s why I always say changing this ONE thing will have a bigger impact on your health than any other single thing you could do.  By the way, once I started drinking more water my headaches went away.  Now I know headaches are one of the first symptoms of dehydration.
